A Korean-American's Visit to Donghak Peasant Revolution Memorial Park

  저는 한국계 미국인으로 어릴 적에 한국 역사를 배우는 것을 좋아했습니다. 나의 뿌리를 알고 싶은 마음과 역사 속 영웅적인 인물들에 관심이 있었기 때문입니다. 저는 몇 시간씩 책상에 앉아 이순신 장군, 세종대왕과 같은 인물에 관한 책들을 읽으면서 어떻게 그런 인물들이 되었는지 많이 궁금했습니다. 그러나 저는 미국으로 이주하여 미국에서 교육을 받았기에 한국 역사에 대해 배울 수 있는 기회가 제한되었고, 대신 교육과정으로 미국 역사를 배웠습니다. 한국의 문화유산을 알고 싶은 저의 마음에도 불구하고 접할 수 있는 기회가 없어지면서 저는 정체성의 본질적인 부분이 단절되는 것 같은 느낌을 받았습니다. 미국에서 대학을 들어갈 때까지 나의 마음에 남아있는 한국 역사에 대한 기억은 대부분 영화나 다큐멘터리에서 보았던 것들로 피상적인 수준에 머물러 있었습니다.

  그러던 차에 마침 동학농민혁명박물관을 방문할 수 있는 기회가 주어졌을 때 저의 부족한 부분을 채울 수 있을 것 같아 호기심과 함께 설레었습니다. 박물관 내부는 밝고 화창한 바깥과는 확연하게 달랐습니다. 박물관을 들어서자 동학농민혁명의 역사적 배경을 설명하는 다양한 이미지가 프로젝터와 스크린을 통해 보이면서 분위기가 순식간에 바뀌었습니다. 저는 영상, 유물, 전시물들을 통해 동학농민혁명에 대해 알 수 있어서 좋았습니다. 박물관을 둘러보면서 동학농민군들이 남긴 많은 이야기와 유물들을 통해 그들이 무엇을 위해 싸웠는지, 동학농민혁명의 정신은 무엇인지에 대해 알 수 있었습니다. 임시변통으로 만든 죽창으로 무장한 수많은 농민군을 상상하면서 이러한 역사적인 사건들을 이뤄나가는데 얼마나 많은 용기가 필요했을지 상상이 가지 않았습니다. 또 추모관 벽을 가득 채운 이름들을 보면서 동학농민혁명의 무게와 동학농민군의 희생에 대해 느낄 수 있었습니다.

  가장 인상 깊었던 것은 동학농민혁명에 참여했던 많은 분이 또한 일본 제국주의에 대항하는 혁명도 주도했다는 사실이었습니다. 그들 중의 일부는 일제강점기로부터 한국이 독립하기 위한 큰 사건들을 이끈 아주 중요한 인물들이었다는 점이었습니다. 동학농민혁명은 여기서 끝나는 것이 아니라 향후 3.1운동, 광주 민주화운동 같은 다른 혁명에도 영향을 주었다는 사실에 감동했습니다.

As a Korean American, my love for learning Korean history started at a young age. It was rooted in a desire to both understand my ancestral roots and also a fascination with heroic historical figures. I would sit in front of my bookshelf and read for hours about figures like Yi Sun-sin and Sejong the Great, wondering how such people came to be. However, as I moved to the United States and progressed through my education, I found that my exposure to Korean history became more limited, while American history dominated the curriculum. Despite my enthusiasm for exploring my cultural heritage, the lack of exploration in Korean history left me feeling disconnected from an essential part of my identity. By the time I got to college in the USA, the only recollections of Korean history I had left in my mind were filled with surface level material, mostly from documentaries and movies.

When I got the opportunity to visit the Donghak Peasant Revolution Museum, I was excited to further fill in the gaps of my limited knowledge and naturally arrived with a very curious mindset. The inside of the museum was a stark contrast to the bright sunny weather outside. Immediately I felt a shift in the mood as various projectors and screens illuminated images that explained the historical backgrounds to the revolution. I was glad to be informed of the context behind the revolution through various video clips, artifacts, and displays. As I walked throughout the museum’s halls, I could know what the Donghak peasants army fought for and what their spirits were through the many stories and artifacts they left behind. Imagining the number of men armed with makeshift bamboo spears I wondered the amount of courage that one must have needed to proceed with these events. Seeing the walls filled with names in the memorial hall also allowed me to feel the weight of the Donghak peasant revolution and the sacrifices that the revolutionists made.

The one thing that stood out to me the most was the fact that many of those who participated in the Donghak Peasant Revolution were also  responsible for Korea’s revolution against Japan’s imperial rule. Some of them were even significant figures and leaders that orchestrated large events throughout Korea’s eventual independence. But it doesn’t stop there. I was surprised to learn that the Donghak Peasant Revolution really became the groundwork that inspired many other revolutions that follows it such as the March 1st Movement and the Gwangju uprising.

  어쩌면 한국과 미국은 역사적인 맥락에서 추구하는 이상이 몇 가지 비슷한 점이 있다고 생각했습니다. 미국 또한 혁명으로 만들어진 나라였기 때문에 저는 혁명의 중요성을 배우는 것이 낯설지 않았습니다. 이미 존재한 국가(한국)가 외세로부터 독립하는 것은 새로운 나라를 만드는 것(미국)과는 다소 차이가 있지만, 이를 이끌어 나간 분들의 마음은 비슷할 것이라고 생각합니다. 온갖 어려움을 무릅쓰고 혁명에 나선다는 것은 스스로의 목표에 대해 완전하게 확신을 가져야 가능했을 것입니다. 하나로 뭉쳐 전투에 나선 동학농민군상을 보면서 나는 그들이 무엇을 위해 싸우는지 스스로 그 중요성을 잘 알고 있었을 것이라는 확신이 들었습니다.

  이번 동학농민혁명기념공원 방문은 한국의 역사 이면을 더 넓은 시야로 볼 수 있게 해준 놀라운 경험이었습니다. 솔직히 처음에는 무엇을 얻을 수 있을지 잘 몰랐지만 그동안 제가 전혀 몰랐던 동학농민혁명의 역사적 맥락과 의미에 대해 알게 되어서 매우 기뻤습니다. 이번 방문은 박물관을 잠깐 둘러보는 것으로 시작하였지만 제가 미국으로 돌아간 후에도 오래도록 기억에 남을 좋은 배움의 장이 되었습니다. 참으로 기쁘고 감사합니다.

This made me think that maybe the ideals of the historical contexts behind Korea and the United States shared a few similarities. The United States was also a nation that was built off of revolution and I was no stranger to learning about its significance. While becoming independent from a foreign occupation of an already existing nation is slightly different to creating a new nation, I believe that the hearts of those involved were of similar nature. To risk everything and fight, one must be completely sure of their purpose, and looking at the multiple statues of the peasants, all walking in unity, I was positive that they all knew the importance of what they were fighting for.

This was an incredible experience that allowed me to see a wider view behind Korea’s history. I have to be honest, I didn’t know what to expect at first but I was pleasantly surprised to learn so much about the context and significance of an event I never knew about. While this visit may have started as a light trip to the museum, I am thankful and happy to see it end as a memorable learning experience to take back to the States.
